Pop-Up Museums

What is a Pop-Up Museum?

The Pop Up Museum is a temporary exhibit created by the people who show up to participate. It works by choosing a theme and venue and then inviting people to bring an object on-topic to share. Participants write a label for their object and leave it on display. A Pop Up Museum usually lasts a few hours on one day. Popping up in unorthodox arts spaces, like libraries or laundromats, Pop Up Museums focus on bringing people together in conversation through stories, art, and objects. They can happen anytime, anywhere, and with any community.

What is the purpose of our Pop-Up Museum?

This exhibition is about telling the stories of the Hill District community, and there's no better way to tell the community's stories than with a pop-up museum.  Everyone has something that they can share, and a pop-up museum gives them the venue to do so.  Pop-up museums are temporary displays created by the attendees.  Each museum has a theme, in this case life on the Hill.  Every visitor has a chance to participate, bringing an object or objects to display and writing an accompanying label.  When the exhibition closes, the collectors take back their objects and art.  At the Our Hill, Our Home exhibit, Duquesne Public History graduate students will be helping local collectors to display their objects and tell their stories the way they want them told.  We look forward to seeing what unique contributions attendees will add to the museum!
